The recent Bognor Regis At Home Day Home Zone open day was well
attended. The event, held on the 31st August saw over 300 people come along to
find out more about the proposed Home Zone and Low Speed Zone. Representatives
of several
public organisations were on hand for an informal chat and to provide
information and
advice.
Amongst those present were representatives of West Sussex County Council, the
police and Bognor Town Council.
Lively discussions were the order of the day, as local residents expressed their
views, asked questions and generally found out more about the HomeZones
The Home Zone or Woonerf concept, was pioneered in the 1970s in the
Netherlands. Since then many
countries have successfully transferred the core concepts and created their own
safe areas.
A Home Zone is a way of "reclaiming" local streets from domination by cars and
restoring safety
and peace to neighbourhoods
Home Zones are an attempt to strike a balance between traffic and every one else
who uses the streets
the pedestrians, cyclists, business people and residents.
Home Zones work through the physical alteration of streets and roads in an
area. These alterations ensure
that motorists drive with greater care and at lower speeds.
Benches, flower beds, planters, lamp posts, fences and trees can be used to
alter the appearance of the streets.
The overall aim is to produce a more attractive environment, which in turn will
add value to houses and businesses in the area.
