Bognor Regis Proposed as First Home Zone in West Sussex

Written 20/08/02

North-West Bognor Regis has been proposed as the first "Home Zone" in West Sussex.

Home Zones are residential streets in which the area is shared between drivers and other road users including pedestrians and cyclists. This involves making changes to the street design to encourage low traffic speeds. The propsed Home Zone is to be based around the Bognor Regis Community College, Michael Ayres Junior School and Glade Infants campuses.

To ensure that traffic enters the Home Zone at low speed, a "Low Speed Zone" is proposed for some of the roads surrounding the Home Zone. Low Speed Zones have more conventional traffic calming measures such as speed humps.

The proposed Home Zone will cover Frith Road, Westloats Lane, Hampshire Avenue, Gravits Lane and Mons Avenue. The Low Speed Zone includes Collyer Avenue, Hawthorn Road, Amberley Drive, Pevensey Road, Town Cross Avenue and numerous other roads within those boundaries.

Whilst the concept of the low speed zone is fine, its proposed boundaries don't extend far enough. Anyone who knows the area will notice that Hillsboro Road is not included in the Low Speed Zone. This effectively turns Hillsboro Road into the only route into central Bognor that does not have either a set of traffic lights or some form of road calming. It will become a rat run in very short time unless it is included in the low speed zone.
