Felpham Parish Council is seeking the support of six other parish
councils (Middleton, Yapton, Bognor, Aldwick, Bersted and Pagham), for a
campaign to provide a bypass for Bognor Regis.
Council Chairman Paul English has called for an end to waiting for a new
road, which would remove thousands of vehicles from the east-west route
through central Bognor.
Six miles of the A259 passes through Middleton, Felpham, Bognor and
North Bersted and carries tens of thousands of vehicles each day. The
road is mainly single carriageway in both directions, and the effect of
any road works, however minor, slows traffic to a crawl.
Previous plans were removed from West Sussex County Council's road
building programme because members believed there was no chance of obtaining
government funding.
Recent controversy over the proposed 1,350 home development in North
Bersted and Felpham has highlighted the failure to build the bypass. The
developers were to fund a northern relief road as part of the project.
The housing project is now under review following a High Court decision
overturning methods used by Arun District Council to approve the scheme.
