Written 07/08/03

Temperatures soaring into the mid 80's during July made last month the warmest in Bognor Regis for the last eight years

The peak temperature recorded at the town's weather station was 83.1°F or 28.4°C, at the time, the hottest day of the summer. Some slightly cooler days pushed the average temperature for July to 22.2°C, way above the seasonal average of 20.2°C. The minimum recorded figure was also higher than the usual 13.6°C giving rise to many sticky and uncomfortable nights.

Unsurprisingly the sun played a major part in the heatwave, producing 251.4 hours of sunshine instead of the seasonal average of 239.1 Bizarrely, 54.2mm of rain fell in July and increase of 11.7mm on the average. The majority (30.6mm) fell in just size days towards the end of the month.

Bognor's weather station, located in Waterloo Square, relays information to the Meteorological Office and is essential in providing official statistics, proving that Bognor is one of the sunniest places in the country. It has been rumoured that the station is to be relocated from Waterloo Square, where it has been for over 100 years, in a bid to make it more secure.
