Arun District Council have caved in to public pressure and is set to
remove the threat of demolition hanging over Bognor Regis Town Hall.
Citing the response to a campaign lead by the Bognor Regis Observer,
Council Leader Norman Dingemans said "From the responses, it is quite
clear that people do not want the Town Hall to be demolished.
"It was a fairly small percentage of the town's population who wrote in,
but if there were three plans on the table and one included the
demolition of the town hall, it is clear not many people would go for
that and there seems little point pursuing that line." he said.
Town Councillor Sylvia Olliver said "It has come as a surprise to me
considering they were saying very strongly it was going to be included
in the brief. Because of the money spent, I could not see how they could
possibly want to demolish it, but all the time it was in the brief, it
was a great possibility."
Paul Wells, a local resident who has submitted an application to English
Heritage to make the Town Hall a listed building said: "It is great news
that common sense has prevailed within the council and that they have
obviously taken public opinion into consideration. The application has
gone in, and hopefully the Town Hall will be listed for future
