Race Background
The Bognor Prom 10K Road Race has grown every year since 1995, and attracts serious club runners from all over the South of England, as well as individuals and families with no club allegiance. All are equally welcome. It is a major event for Bognor Regis, a day of challenge and personal achievement for runners and a spectacle for the public who line the route.
The race would not be possible without the help of our many sponsors and helpers. Many are acknowledged opposite, but particular thanks are due to the Bognor Regis Observer, which has been closely involved with the event since the early days, joined this year by Peter Cooper Cars. We are delighted to welcome Sammy Community Transport as charity partner for 2008 and we hope that the run will raise significant sums of money for the charity as well as other good causes close to the hearts of our runners. The Rotary Club of Bognor Hotham will increase all money raised by the runners, through its top-up scheme, and always gives thousands of pounds to charities from the event.
The organisers offer regular training sessions through Rotary Road Runners, a small but keen group of runners who meet every Thursday at 7pm at West Park. Anyone wishing to join them will be welcome, regardless of ability - just turn up.
The Rotary Club of Bognor Hotham and the Rotary Club of Bognor Regis are part of the worldwide organisation known as Rotary International. This worldwide fellowship unites men and women in the ideal of service. Both clubs provide most of the 85 marshals needed to manage the road race. Internationally, Rotary has been responsible for raising millions of pounds for such projects as eliminating polio throughout the world, and responding to major emergencies.
The Bognor Prom 10K is a major part of the Rotary Club of Bognor Hotham's annual programme of community service and fund-raising.
If you would like to know more about Rotary (we always welcome new members), please contact our Membership Officer: Gersham Boulton - 01243 261672
Information for Runners
This is a flat, high-speed course, which has been awarded Silver grading by BARR to recognise the quality of its organisation.
Starting by West Park in Aldwick (where there is extensive free car parking for competitors), the course, which has some minor improvements this year, follows the Bognor Regis Esplanade. It continues through the village of Felpham and returns along the sea front to finish in West Park. Height undulation is less than two metres; water is available at 5.5K and at the finish. A rolling road closure operates where public highways are used. The course is marshalled throughout, allowing for a maximum race time limit of 90 minutes.
Unfortunately there are no changing or bag storage facilities. The course is regrettably unsuitable for wheelchairs and competitors are not allowed to run with dogs or be accompanied by cyclists or other wheeled carriages.
No entries will be possible on the day. Full race information will be provided, including a map of the course, directions to the car park, and your race number, following receipt of your entry form.
Chip Timing
Each athelete will receive a unique timing chip, using a sophisticated electronic timing system provided by raceahead. This will give an accurate actual time (Chip time) for the course, which is the time from crossing the start line to crossing the finish line. So, "no Chip" means "no time".
Raceahead are the leading ChampionChip timers in the UK, and have been involved with some of the country's most prestigious organised sports events over the past few years.
Included in the timing service is a SMS text message to every competitor who provides a relevant number on the entry form. Full results will be posted on this site, the raceahead web site www.raceahead.net and in the Bognor Regis Observer.
Start training early: entries will be processed in strict order of receipt. You will know your entry has been accepted when your cheque is paid from your bank account. However, race packs cannot be sent out until March, to reduce the risk of Chips being lost by early entrants. All chips must be returned. Assistance will be provided.
How can you raise funds for charity or good causes?
Use the Rotary sponsorship form that will be sent to you with your race number. Whatever your preferred charity, this will be your free entry for the Sammy Community Transport prize draw. You could win a two return air tickets to any destination in mainland Europe. Rotary will also add up to 25% to the money you raise. Terms and conditions apply. About the Junior Fun Runs
Two separate events take place before the main race: 800 metres for 8-11 year olds, and 1500 metres for 12-14 year olds. The £2 entrance fee includes a medal for all finishers. Not a race, these fun runs are for youngsters to enjoy a healthy activity and perhaps raise sponsorship for their school or charity. Both runs take place on the Promenade, close to West Park. Apply by separate entry form available from the JFR Secretary, Nigel Hasted (01243 584049) or tick the box on the entry form for further details.
